This should not be the same color as the Background or text will not appear. Default color is 7. Select a color between 0 and 15. Background Color: This is the color of the background in terminal mode. Default color is 0. Select a color from 0 to 7. Screen Border Color: This is the color that surrounds the screen area when Qmodemis running. Note : If you are using an EGA card, this will have no effect. Default color is 0. Select a color from 0 to 15. Primary Window Color: This is the color of any Highlighted text inside the window.This color should not be the same as the Window Background or text will not appear in the window. Default color is 15. Select a color from 0 to 15. Secondary Window Color: This is a color that should complement the Primary Window color and is used to show non highlighted text. This color should not be the same as the Window Background or text willnot appear in the window. Default color is 7. Select a color from 0 to 15. Window Background Color: This is the color of the background in all of Qmodem's windows. Default color is 0. Select a color from 0 to 7. Window Moving: Enter the Window number (1 - 9) to move and press F2. The screen will clear and draw a box. Use the Arrow keys to move the box around on the screen. When you come to the edge of the screen, a beep will sound and you cannot go any further in that direction. Press Esc when you are satisfiedwith the placement of the window. Select a Window number from 1 to 9. Baud Rate: This is the rate (speed) in bits/second that you want Qmodemto start at. You can re-adjust this while in Qmodem by pressing Alt-P. Valid Baud Rates : 300 1200 2400 4800 9600 19200 & 38400. Data Bits: This is the number of bits (8 bits = 1 byte) which contains data. If 7 Data bits is selected, the 8th bit is used as the Parity bit. 8 Data bits is the most common and is required to do binary file transfers using the XMODEM protocol. Valid Data Bits are : 7 or 8. Parity: Qmodem supports 3 types of parity: Even, Odd and None. Even ('E') and Odd ('O') uses 7 Data bits and None (or 'N') uses 8 Data bits. XMODEM protocol requires a Parity of None ('N'). Valid Parity settings are : E, O or N. Stop Bits: Communications use either 1 or 2 Stop Bits. Check with the service you will be communicating with for the correct setting. Note: 99.9% will use only 1 Stop bit. Valid Stop Bits are : 1 or 2. Change AFTER Baud Rate String: This is the string to be sent out AFTER switching baud rates. Most modems, compatible with the Hayes, do not need to use this feature. If your modem DOES need to sync with your computer after a baud rate change, enter the string of characters needed to do the job. Special Characters : The tilde ~ generates a ½ second delay. The carat ^ followed by A thru Z generates the Control character. IE: ^A = hex 01. The left curly brace { = the RETURN key. Maximum of 14 characters. Redial Delay: This is the number of seconds between Redial attempts. A good starting number is 30 seconds. Valid range : 0 to 32767. (seconds) Cancel Delay: This is the number of seconds Qmodem will wait looking for aCONNECTion before it cancels the dial attempt. Check your modem manual to see is you need to change a register (S7 in Hayes & compatibles) so that the modem will wait as long as Qmodem does. A good starting number is 60 seconds. Valid range : 0 to 9999. (seconds) Modem Dial Pacing: This is the number of milliseconds Qmodem will pause betweeneach character while sending a command to the modem. Most modems do not need to be paced, but if it looks like digits or characters are being dropped, this should be increased inincrements of 1 millisecond until successful. Valid range : 0 - 32767 (milliseconds) COM Port: Qmodem supports Com1 through Com8. Select the one which yourmodem is connected to. Refer to Screen 3 of this major topic for more information on configuring Ports 3 thru 8. Valid COM Ports : 1 thru 8 Connect Message: Enter the message (or numeric code) your modem returns when a connection has been established. Examples: CONNECT, ON-LINE Note: This field is case sensitive (Upper and Lower) Maximum of 14 characters. No Connect Message: Enter 1 of 4 messages (or numeric codes) your modem returns when it has failed to make a connection. Examples: NO CONNECT, NO CARRIER, BUSY, NO DIAL TONE, etc.. Note: This field is case sensitive (Upper and Lower) Maximum of 14 characters each. Cancel Dial Characters: This is the string sent to your modem to cancel the dial attempt while in Redial mode. Most modems only need to sendone character while a few need to send more than one. Usually, any character will do. (Refer to your modem manual for exact specifications). If you would like to toggle the DTR signal, enter 'DTR' (in capitals). Special Characters : The tilde ~ generates a ½ second delay. The carat ^ followed by A thru Z generates the Control character. Modem Initialization String: Enter the string of modem commands to be sent to your modem when Qmodem is first started. All valid modem commands can be entered. Example : AT E0 Q0 X1 V1 S7=60{ Maximum of 40 characters. Dial Prefix: This is the character string at the beginning of a modem dial command. Example: ATDT, ^N D, *ODT, etc.. Maximum of 14 characters. Dial Suffix: This is the character string at the end of a modem dial command. Normally this would be the RETURN key, but some modems need a single quote followed by RETURN and others need an 'X' without the RETURN. Special Characters : The tilde ~ generates a ½ second delay. Modem HangUp String: This is the character string sent to the modem to cancel theconnection and hang up the phone. If the DTR signal is to be toggled, enter 'DTR' (in capitals). Xmodem Transfer Character: Some modems, like the PCjr internal 300, are always looking at the data going out to see if there is a command characterpresent. If it sees one, it thinks the next group of characters are commands that should be executed. This is fine until you try an Xmodem Transfer. When sending a blockof data in Xmodem, the PCjr modem will edit out the command characters and try to execute them. The manual says to sendout a command character, send out 2 of them in a row and themodem will send out only 1. If your modem is just like this, enter the character your modem needs to send out twice(and will look alright in the Xmodem block). Special Character : The carat ^ followed by A thru Z generates the Control character. IE: ^A = hex 01. Maximum of 2 characters. Screen Dump Filename: Qmodem can take a picture of your screen and save it to disk. This is called a Screen Dump. Enter the name of the file you would like to store your screen dumps in. This MUST be a valid DOS filename using Drive:\Path\Filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\SCREEN.DMP Maximum of 64 characters. Session Capture Filename: Qmodem has the capability to capture your communication session and save it to disk. Enter the name of the file you would like to store your session in. This MUST be a valid DOS filename using Drive:\Path\Filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\SESSION.CAP Maximum of 64 characters. Add Linefeeds: This tells Qmodem wether or not to add a Linefeed to every carriage return that is received (in terminal mode). Normally this would be set to N (no). Valid answers : Y or N. Swap the BS for DEL: Qmodem now can make the Backspace (BS) key look like the DELkey of some terminal programs. Most terminal emulations like VT100 use the DEL key as their "destructive" backspace and a ^H as a "nondestructive" backspace. Setting this value to 'N' makes the BS key send a ^H, just as a normal PCdoes. Setting it to 'Y' make the BS key send the DEL code and a ^BS sends the normal ^H. Valid answers : Y or N. Music Decoding: This tells Qmodem whether or not to generate the music that can be encoded in escape sequences found on some BBS's. If this is set to N (no), Qmodem will edit out the Music sequences and not play the music. Valid answers : Y or N. BIOS Screen Writes: There are two ways to display data on the screen... 1) Using the snappy writes that go directly to video memory (Qmodem's default mode) 2) The terribly slow BIOS method (which will make Qmodem compatible with programs such as DoubleDOS, TopView, DESQview and Windows). Choose the method which best suits your needs. A 'Y' means use BIOS and a 'N' means write directly to video memory. Valid answers : Y or N. Use CTS: Qmodem has two new protocols, Imodem and Ymodem-G. Both rely on CTS/RTS signal checking. Before you set this parameter to Y (yes), be SURE you understand CTS/RTS signal checking. (Refer to the Flow Control appendix for more information). Valid answers : Y or N. Download Directory: This is where you can specify an optional download directory. If this contains a valid DOS Path in the standard Drive:\Path format, Qmodem will save all downloadedfiles in this subdirectory. Example: C:\QMODEM\DOWNLOAD Maximum of 64 characters. Xon / Xoff : This tells Qmodem whether ot not to enable the Xon/Xoff protocol on startup. The Alt-Z key combination will toggle this from Qmodem. Xon/Xoff protocol is a method of pacing transmissions from one computer to another. If one computercannot accept more data, it will usually send a Ctrl-S (Xoff) to tell the other computer to stop. When the first computer can accept more data, it will send a Ctrl-Q (Xon) to the other computer to tell it to start sending again. Check with the service you will be communicating with to see if Xon/Xoff is supported/required. Valid answers are : Y or N. Qmodem Beeps & Bells : Qmodem can generate all sorts of beeps and bells to notify you of a change in operations. Like at the end of a downloador upload, split screen toggle, and when Redial makes a connection. To make Qmodem silent, enter 'N'. Valid answers are : Y or N. Redial sets Baud rate : When Qmodem is in Redial mode, it has the capability to change the baud rate based on the connect message. If the message was CONNECT 1200 and you had dialed at 2400, Qmodem would change the speed to 1200. This only affects the baud rate, not the parity or stop bits. If your modem can be setin a constant rate mode, ie: stays at 2400 and the modem does the stepping up or down to the phone line, you would want to leave this set 'N'. Valid answers are : Y or N. Stack/Heap memory : Qmodem uses dynamic memory allocation for the Scroll-Back buffer. This will let you decide just how much of your computers memory should be used for Scroll-Back and the DOS Shell. Qmodem requires a minimum of 48K for internal use. The DOS Shell will use the memory above the Scroll-Back area. (Refer to the Section on Memory Management for more information). Minimum Size is 48K. Script File Directory: This is where you specify an optional directory to store your script files. Qmodem will append you script filename to this entry and try to execute the script. If this field is left blank, Qmodem assumes the script file is in the current drive/directory. Example: C:\QMODEM\SCRIPTS Maximum of 64 characters. Screen Blink during Scroll: If you are running a Monochrome, EGA or VGA, this has no effect and either setting will work. If you are running a Color Graphics card, this will tell Qmodem whether or not your screen "blinks" when it scrolls. If it does, set this to 'Y'. If not, set it to 'N'. A side effect of the blink may be snow or twinkles when windows are opened and closed. If you see this "snow", set this to 'Y'. Valid answers are : Y or N. Base Addresses & IRQ Settings: These addresses refer to the place in memory where your communications hardware is located. Each COM port has a unique address and cannot be duplicated in the list. The first two are filled in by Qinstall and are correct for most PCs. The PCjr works as shown if the internal modem is used. If you want to use the external serial port without the internal modem, change the IRQ for COM1 to 3. Please refer to your hardware manual for information on BASE addresses and IRQ settings. Upload Directory: This is where you can specify an optional upload directory. If this field holds a valid DOS Path in the standard Drive:\Path format, Qmodem w ill send files from this subdirectory. Example: C:\QMODEM\UPLOAD Maximum of 64 characters. Help File Directory: This is where you specify the directory where Qmodem can find its Online Help File. If this field holds a valid DOS Path in the standard Drive:\Path format, Qmodem will be ableto display Online Help! Example: C:\QMODEM Maximum of 64 characters. Browse File Directory: This is where you specify the directory where Qmodem can find an optional BROWSE program. Alt-V will take advantage of this program and not prompt for a method to View the selected file. Example: C:\UTILITY\LIST { LIST (c) Vern Buerg } Maximum of 64 characters. Information Color: This is the color of the Information messages in Qmodem. This should not be the same color as the Screen Background or text will not appear. Default color is 15. Select a color from 0 to 15. Window Border Color: This is the color of the Border for all windows in Qmodem. This should not be the same color as the window Background or text will not appear. Select a color from 0 to 15. Status Line Foreground Color: This is the color of the Status Line in Qmodem. This should not be the same color as the Status Line Background or text will not appear. Default color is 15. Select a color between 0 and 15. Status Line Background Color: This is the background color of the Status Line in Qmodem. This should not be the same color as the Status Line Foreground or text will not appear. Default color is 0. Select a color from 0 to 7. Redial Cancel String: This is a string returned by your modem where you would wantthe Redial to not make the next call. Example: You are calling a busy bulletin board with you voice phone line. A friend tries to call you. Your modem (if Hayes compatible) sends the string "RING" to let you know someone is calling. The Redial would detect this "RING" and abort so you could answer the phone (voice). Otherwise, the Redial Delay would expire and Qmodem would try to redial the number. Maximum of 14 characters. Change BEFORE Baud Rate String: This is the string to be sent out BEFORE switching baud rates. Some high speed modems need to be told that a speed change is coming to be able to detect the new speed. Special Characters : The tilde ~ generates a ½ second delay. The carat ^ followed by A thru Z generates the Control character. IE: ^A = hex 01. The left curly brace { = the RETURN key. Maximum of 14 characters. Status Window Display Duration: The number of seconds that the window will remain on the screen before disappearing. This is specified as a Real number (one with a decimal point). Example: 3.0 -- Three second delay 0.5 -- One half second delay 0.0 -- Flash on and off Maximum of 99.9 seconds. Additional Transfer Timeout: This is the number of seconds to be ADDED to the normal transfer (upload/download) timeout. Most high speed modems have the ability to remain at a high speed (say 19200) and still talk to another modem at 1200 or 2400 baud. Because Qmodem uses the serial port speed rather than the line speed to compute timeouts, the possibility of timeouts is greatly increased. If your modem remains at the high speed, you should set this to at least 30 seconds or greater for Xmodem and at least 45 seconds or greater for Ymodem transfers. Maximum of 9999 seconds. PCjr Usage: If you have at least 256K of memory, you can set this to 'Y' and be able to run Qmodem. This will tell Qmodem to initialize the COM port using the standard PCjr method. This will also limit the maximum baud rate in Qmodem to 4800 baud (because the PCjr cannot handle higher speeds). Valid answers : Y or N. Scroll Back Filename: Qmodem can copy the contents of the Scroll Back buffer to disk. Enter the name of the file you would like to store your Scroll Back dumps in. This MUST be a valid DOS filename using Drive:\Path\Filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\SCROLL.SAV Maximum of 64 characters. Select Character: This is the character to be used to select the external protocol. It appears in both the Upload and Download windows. This must be a unique letter or number. The characters A,X,C,R,Y,I,G are reserved by Qmodem and cannot be selected. Also, you can not duplicate a Select Character with any already defined. Name of Protocol: This is the Name of the external protocol to be defined. Any text string can be used, such as: [Ymodem Batch] or [SuperKermit] are both valid. The field cannot be blank. Enter it as you would like to see it listed in the Upload and Download windows. Maximum of 12 characters. Upload Batch Filename: To execute an external protocol, Qmodem shells to a Batch file. The Upload Batch Filename is the BAT file which contains the commands necessary to complete the Upload. Anyvalid BAT file can be entered. Example : [KERMITUP.BAT] Maximum of 12 characters. Download Batch Filename: To execute an external protocol, Qmodem shells to a Batch file. The Download Batch Filename is the BAT file which contains the commands necessary to complete the Download. Any valid BAT file can be entered. Example : [KERMITDL.BAT] Maximum of 12 characters. Download File Prompt: This is used if you want Qmodem to prompt for a filename when doing an external Download. It the protocol does not need the filename, as in Kermit and Ymodem Batch, this would be [N]. If it was a protocol like WXmodem that needed to know the filename in the Batch file, then this would be [Y]. Connect Tones: You can change the default connect tones generated by the Redial window when a valid connection has been made. All three tones are used in sequence for a striking effect. Thisis normally in the range of 200 to 2000 Hz(cycles/sec). Default is 1200 Hz, 1400 Hz, 1600 Hz. Maximum of 9999 Hz. Download Tone: You can change the default tone generated when a successful Download completes. This is normally in the range of 200 to 2000 Hz(cycles/sec). Default is 1200 Hz. Maximum of 9999 Hz. Upload Tone: You can change the default tone generated when a successful Upload has been made. This is normally in the range of 200 to 2000 Hz(cycles/sec). Default is 1200 Hz. Maximum of 9999 Hz. Log File: Qmodem can keep a LOG of operation including phone calls, hangups, file transfers, and much more. Enter the name of the file you would like to store your LOG in. This MUST be a valid DOS filename using Drive:\Path\Filename. Example: C:\QMODEM\SESSION.LOG Maximum of 64 characters. Default Terminal Emulation: This determines the Terminal Emulation Qmodem will use when first started. It can be changed at any time with the Alt-Gcommand. [A] TTY - Is generic and does no Emulation. [B] ANSI - Emulates the ANSI.SYS driver for most BBS's. [C] VT100 - Emulates the VT100 Terminal from DEC. [D] TVI 925 - Emulates the TeleVideo 925 Terminal. Refer to the Documentation for a better description of each.LOG File AutoStart: With this set to 'Y', the log file will be automatically started each time you start Qmodem. If set to 'N', you willhave to open the log file with the Alt-0 command whenever you so choose. Y or N only. Download Buffer Blocks: New with version 3.1 is the ability to adjust the number of blocks used to buffer downloads before writing to disk. Theminimum allowed is 8 and the maximum is 240. Qinstall will automatically round your number to an even multiple of 8 so you don't need a calculator. This buffer now comes out of the available memory of the heap/stack you selected on this page. If there is not enough heap/stack declared, Qmodem will automatically select the largest buffer available. Minimum 8, Maximum 240 ENQ (^E) Message String: This is the string of characters that get sent when Qmodem receives an ENQ from the host. Because there is no toggle in Qmodem to turn this on and off, if this string is non- blank, the text entered here will always be sent. Special Characters : The tilde ~ generates a ½ second delay.
